The Quickest Way To End Any Conversation

We’ve all been in conversations where the only thing we can think of is how to exit with poise. Here are some one liners to help you end a conversation in a multitude of situations:
While talking to someone who won’t stop complaining…
“I’m sorry to hear that.” Then change the subject.
When you run into your friend’s girlfriend at a bar… with another guy.
“It was nice seeing you again!” In a falsely cheery voice.
At a social event with someone you don’t like…
“Enjoy your evening.” It’s open bar, right?
In an awkward group conversation…
“My phone is vibrating… excuse me.” This might require some acting.
When your boss is mad at you…
“I’m sorry, it won’t happen again.” Make sure it doesn’t.
On AIM or chat…
“I have to go.” No need to pretend your dog is on fire.
When someone you aren’t interested in is hitting on you…
“I’m married.” Even if you aren’t. (Unfortunately, this one still doesn’t always work.)
At a networking event…
“Have you met ____________? Let me introduce you.” Technically two sentences, but since you orchestrate the answer to the first question, it’s practically one.
I don’t suggest rudeness, but when conversations get extreme and look like they are headed downhill, these simple phrases provide a quick “out.” With that said, “Have a great day!”

Hi! I'm Monica O'Brien and I created this website in January 2008 as a place for twentysomething professionals who wanted to be a part of a personal and professional development community. Now, I've joined forces with the Brazen Careerist team to meet this goal on a larger scale. I continue to maintain this blog as a place to talk about what I'm learning as I tackle marriage, a start-up, and graduate school.
