On Thursday, November 14th, 2008, a normal day at Northern Illinois University, Valentines Day, something terrible happened. A shooter killed six innocent students in a hellish manner. The details are not important, but the reaction is.

Only two things can come out of a situation like this: fear or strength. As a student of NIU, it was important for me to do my part to show my fellow students how much we all care and will stay strong during such a crisis. My friends and I made simple signs with the words “May Angels Lead You In” and “Hate Nothing But Hate” and stood outside the Holmes Student Center memorial to send our condolences and our feelings to the victims. I was pleased to see that others were also doing their part. There were plenty of signs and notes that gave messages of hope and love which reminded me just how great of a place DeKalb is.

I think it is obvious that what happened at my school last week was terrifying and should never happen, but how do we stop it? I would like to look back at one of the quotes we put on a sign, “Hate Nothing But Hate.” I believe the only way we are going to prevent these types of hate crimes in the future is by loving one another. Hatred does not justify any such crime as killing another person; however, the shooter’s hatred probably resulted from other peoples’ hatred towards him.

This is where the problem lies. Everyone needs to drop their prejudices and just love one another. Stop looking at color, physical attributes, and gender to make decisions about what makes a good person.

With that said, God Bless and take care.
